Waning Moon House Cleansing Ritual

It’s the time of the waning moon which means it’s the perfect time for a banishing ritual.  I can’t think of a better way to ease into the dark moon time than to cleanse your home of all negative energy.

I have put together a simple ritual that anyone can use.  There are no limits to the ways this can be worked.  You can add to this and take away from it as you see fit.  I just offer you here a basic banishing/cleansing ritual.

While I don’t call upon any personal deities while doing this, you may feel free to ask your personal gods and goddesses to assist you in the cleansing.

Here is a list of things you will want to gather up before you perform the ritual:

1. A new, never used spray bottle – you can find one at a dollar store

2. Salt water – the easiest way to make this is to fill the spray bottle with water (spring water would be best, but use what you have) then take a half teaspoon of salt and put it into the water, shaking the bottle to help the salt dissolve before use

3. Sage bundle, incense of your choice, or palo santo wood and something to light it with – make sure you have an abalone shell, bowl or pan to catch the burning ash as it falls

4. A small black candle and appropriate holder – black is a great color for banishing and removing negative energy and either a votive or small chime candle would work great

That’s all you need to get started.  If you want, you may carry a black stone with you as you work this ritual.  Add anything you want to make this more personal for you.

Now, onto the actual ritual.

As previously stated, the best time to do any kind of banishing work is during the waning phase of the moon.  I choose to work this kind of ritual on a Saturday just after sunset.  Saturday is ruled by the planet Saturn and the color for Saturn is black.  It’s just a good day for extra oomph in your magic.

Go through your home and open every single drawer, cabinet, and door in the house.  The purpose of this is to let the smoke permeate every nook and cranny in your home.  You want to be sure that all negative energy is cleansed, and to do this, you need to open everything in your home that is currently closed.

Place the unlit black candle in a safe area near the front door of your home.  Make sure it is on a piece of furniture and in a place where it cannot be tipped over or set anything on fire.  Put it in a glass or metal candle holder.

Light the candle, then light the sage/incense/palo santo with the flame from the candle.

Starting in a counterclockwise position, start at the front door and walk around the interior of your home.  When you approach a doorway, cabinet or drawer, sweep the smoke across it from right to left.  As you are walking through your home doing this, visualize the smoke pulling all negative energies from every place in your home.  Continue this until you have covered the entire place.

Once you return to the front door, snuff out the burning sage/incense/palo santo and set it on the shell/bowl/pan then pick up the spray bottle.  You will then do what you just did with the smoke.  Starting counterclockwise, walk through your home, spritzing the salt water at doorways, cabinets and drawers. As you do this, visualize the salt neutralizing all of the negative energy that the smoke has drawn out from the deepest crevices.

As you approach the front door again, pick up your sage/incense/palo santo then relight it in the candle flame.  This time you will walk clockwise throughout the house, smudging each doorway, cabinet and drawer with the smoke, moving left to right.  As you reach a door, smudge then close it.  As you reach a cabinet, smudge then close it.  As you reach a drawer, smudge then close it.

Visualize light energy filling each space.  You should by now feel the positive energy flood into your presence.

When you have covered the entire home, return to the front door.  Smudge yourself, feeling the smoke pull all negativity from your body.  Smudge the door next and release all of the negative energy to the outside.  Shut the door and snuff the sage/incense/palo santo.

Now, all you need to do is allow your candle to burn down completely.

Find a place to sit and observe the candle flame.  Send any negative feelings or thoughts that surface in your awareness straight to the candle for it to burn away.  Send all of it straight into the fire.  When the candle has burned itself out, take the wick and any remaining black wax and bury it outside your home in the furthest corner of your property.

It’s a good idea to take a bath or shower after the work is completed so that your physical body is cleansed as well.

You should find that sleep comes easily and quickly after the ritual is worked.  I believe that anything that has been bothering you will be dissipated.

Peace, and be well.

    1. Hello! You may bury it anywhere outside of your home. I typically bury them in the east-facing part of my yard, mostly because I envision the rising sun cleansing the earth as it moves toward the west. I hope that helps! 😊

  3. I’m moving into a new home and plan to do this ritual. When opening all doors and cabinets, do I also open my windows to allow the smoke to escape? I normally do this when smudging with sage. Thanks so much!

    Blessed be 🙂

    1. Hello Carmen!

Yes, I usually do open the windows for the smoke to exit the house. Not sure why I forgot to put that in my blog post! Best wishes in your new home. May it be filled with light and love. ❤️

      Blessed be!

  4. I missed the waning moon by 1 day, but I do NOT want to wait until the next waning crescent. Banishing smudging needs to be done. What are your thoughts on the 1st night of a new moon?

    1. Hi Tara, thank you for your comment and question. Speaking from my own ideas, I think that the first night of a new moon still has the energy necessary for the task. It’s been said that the full moon energy is strong the day before, the day of, and the day after. I like to think the same of the new moon. Hope this helps!
