oceanside daydream – a poem

alone on the beach i sit, counting

the grains of sand on my toes

as quietly i am called…

…i hear my name

i turn to see, but no one is there

apart from a lone seagull

she stares at me

with sorrowful eyes

captivated, i reach into my bag

and retrieve a crust from

my sandwich bread, i beckon her

come…

slowly, she walks

toward me, slowly

emptiness surrounds the oceanside

as two lonely souls sit

alone, eyes meeting eyes

as hearts are joined

cautious, as if hurt before

she takes the bread, eating

enraptured, the gull sings

and at once our world feels whole
