On being sick

If illness has ever taught me anything, it has taught me this.

There are times in life where we simply must slow down, acknowledge our bodies, and rest.

Late last month, I came down with a case of bronchitis. It’s been awhile since I have suffered from this, so when it happened I was literally wiped out for a week.

I spent one full day in bed. Anyone who knows me knows that even though I talk about spending all day in bed, I can’t do it. I feel that if I sleep a day away, it’s a day lost forever.

This period of illness caused me to slow down and realize that the only way to recover from any kind of sickness is plenty of rest. I’d heard it my whole life but disregarded the advice. How can you rest when there is so much to do?

Now I have decided that when my body is stressed and becomes ill, it is telling me to take time for rest and recovery. A full day in bed sounds like good medicine to me.

My only hope is that bronchitis doesn’t come around again for many years to come.
