Velvet: An Excerpt from Chapter Four

Please enjoy a snippet from my new novel, Velvet, which can be purchased here at Amazon.

“Damn it, Dee. You’re scaring me.”

“Don’t be frightened, Nyx. I don’t mean to scare you. Raphael needed you to know.” Dee reached over and caressed my face with his rough fingers. “Too bad it wasn’t to be with me. You know I’ve always thought you were my angel. You’ve always made me so very happy.”

“Dee.”

“Sorry. I know. Bad Dee.”

I smiled at him. “Okay, so what’s the big news that you wanted to share concerning your visitation? I’m dying to know.”

“I’m going home.”

“I thought you said you weren’t moving back to Florida.”

“No,” he said, “not that home. My real home.”

“Come on, Dee. Quit fucking with me.”

“I’m not fucking with you. God’s coming in a cloud to take me home, only you can’t tell anyone about this. No one. Do I have your word?”

“Yes, of course,” I said. “But come on now. God hasn’t come down in a cloud for thousands of years. What makes you so sure he’s coming for you?”

“Raphael said so.” (more…)

Velvet: An Excerpt from Chapter Three

From my new novel, Velvet, available for Kindle and in paperback at Amazon.

“On the corner of East State and Drayton I saw a small crowd gathered together before a woman dressed in black. She had a long, flowing cape hanging from her shoulders and a fake raven on her shoulder. I sniffed at the gimmick, until the bird turned to look at me. It screeched.

Nope. Not a fake bird. (more…)

New music from The Monkees

Okay, now for something completely different!

I have a secret (well, now it’s not so secret) obsession…a lifetime love of The Monkees. Yes, it’s true. Since discovering them in reruns as a 10 year old way back in the 70’s, I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for America’s answer to the Fab Four.

Imagine the joy I feel sharing this, the first single off the new album “Good Times.” This song was written by Rivers Cuomo of the band Weezer. I think he captured the energy of the band from back in the day. If this one track is any indication of what’s to come with the release of the record, I think my summer will be full of “Good Times” indeed.

Thanks Michael, Micky and Peter for bringing a lot of joy to the world on this your 50th anniversary. ❤

The Wisdom of Ilona Royce Smithkin

Artist Ilona Royce Smithkin is one of the beautiful senior ladies that are featured in Ari Seth Cohen’s fabulous blog, Advanced Style. She recently turned 96 and is still going strong.

In my Facebook feed this morning, I ran across a blog post featuring Ilona’s five tips to “make life more agreeable.” I loved what I read and thought you might, too. Erik Liberman is the owner of this blog. You may check out his personal page here.

From this point forward, I intend to share blogs that I run across, especially those that I think have something important to say. Be on the lookout for this new feature.

In the meantime, please enjoy this blog entry on Ilona here at Well Within.

Velvet: An Excerpt from Chapter One

From Chapter One of the new novel, Velvet:

“I opened the gull wing door of my trusty old DeLorean, tossed myself into the driver seat and fired up the ignition.

Traffic was light and for that I was thankful. I drove the car like a seasoned jockey, rolling fast through the narrow streets and historic squares of Savannah. Propelled by some hard-driving rock and roll on the stereo, I was unstoppable.

Mark would have said it was irresponsible, my driving like this. I could hear him now, his Southern drawl spitting the words out at me like poisoned darts.

“Only fools drive fast and treat their cars like Formula 1 machines,” he would have said.

But why waste my time thinking of Mark? He’s my ex. I intended for him to stay in my rearview mirror for good.”

The Ocean

Sometimes I feel so very drawn to the ocean. Most times, my land-locked situation gets to me. Oh to be able to rush to the beach on a whim. To wade in the soft, rolling surf.

A girl can dream, though…and dream I do. Maybe a little too much.

Behind closed eyes, I can go anywhere.

Where would you like to be today?

The Merfolk

For the past several years, I have been drawn deeply to the mermaid myth.

The idea of a race of half-human, half-fish beings who live and love under the deep blue sea is such a marvelous thing to consider.

Are mermaids and mermen real? And while we’re at it, is anything real…really? (more…)

Velvet: An Excerpt from Chapter Two

From Chapter Two of the new novel, Velvet:

“Loose gravel crunched under my tires as I pulled in to the parking space in front of my townhouse. I killed the ignition and loaded shopping bags onto my arm. The keys jangled in my hand when I pulled the car door shut.

Turning toward the townhouse, I saw something sitting on the welcome mat. It made me stop in my tracks. There on the front step was a package. It sat there like a cat waiting to be let indoors. (more…)
