Velvet – An Excerpt from Chapter Two

Please enjoy this short excerpt from the novel Velvet, available here from Amazon.

Mercedes sat at a table close to the entrance so I walked over and took the seat next to her. Dee saw me as soon as I entered the restaurant and ran over to meet me.

“Holy one, so glad to see you.” He bowed then grabbed me into a hug. His dreadlocks were now just about to his waist. The beads around his neck looked like they weighed several pounds.

“Hi, Dee.” I laughed out loud at that. Holy one, indeed.

He held me a moment too long, and then a moment more. (more…)

Life is Short, So Do What Makes You Smile

As I’ve grown older, I see the value in finding joy and happiness in life every single day.

Life is short. Do what makes you smile.

What have you been putting off in your life, waiting for “the right time?” Today is the right time to pursue an idea, dream, skill, education…you name it. What is that wished-for wish, that long-unfulfilled achievement?

Is there a valid reason why you can’t start today? Even one little step today toward the direction of your dream is one little step closer to making it a reality.

Do more of what makes you happy.

Do more. Do often!

Just Keeping It Real

I can’t speak for all bloggers, but I can speak for myself. Why else would I blog? What is the point of communicating if you don’t use your voice, whether in speaking or writing or by using some other form of communication?

This post is going to be a simple one, and from the heart. It’s about keeping it real.

Fame is an exciting thing to think about. Money, influence, power…some people crave that.

Not me.

There are many people who feel the need to be famous. Nothing wrong with that at all. If that’s what makes them real, then I say go for it. Even though many people dream of it, not everyone is destined to be a rock star.

This person here just wants to share thoughts and ideas. I bare my soul on this webpage. What you see is truly what you get. In fact, my first novel, Velvet, is based on my real-life experiences. When you see my name attached to anything, you know you can trust that what I write is real.

My goal with blogging, writing books, and doing art is simple.

I just want to touch a life or two while I’m living out my life on the earth.

My motivating force in life has always been this: to help others, to be a shoulder to lean on, and to be a good listener.

I’m not interested in climbing social ladders or being the center of attention. What I am interested in is becoming the best writer that I can be. I want to write all the stories that have been itching to come out of me for the past twenty years. I want to find and share things that I feel will help everyone get through their day with a smile.

I look forward to the day that I can do this full time.

For now, though, I will grasp each free moment and use it toward my goal. I write for myself, but I also write for you. I feel that we all experience similar things in different situations. As humans, it’s to be expected that we will have bad days, tragic experiences, stressful occasions.

My goal here is to share things that will help you (and myself) during those darker, sadder, more intense times of life.

Thank you for allowing me to reach out to you through this website. I do wish the best for you and yours, and I hope that what I share here helps you in some way.

Life Within That In-Between Place

Most times I feel happy, joyful, elated…glad to be alive.

Other times I feel like…why am I here? What’s the point?

Today I’m in-between those extremes. Nothing bad has happened. No one has said anything hurtful. I have my health and all of my needs are met. Yet still, there is that in-between place where no word exists to express the emotion.

That said, is there an emotion to describe the state of in-betweenness? (more…)

Velvet: An Excerpt from Chapter Two

Please enjoy a snippet from my novel Velvet, available here from Amazon.

Sam sat in my lap and watched me take sips from my glass. The wine made my mind fuzzy.

I liked fuzz.

The bottle of Merlot I’d purchased this morning was not quite three-fourths empty. I didn’t feel any pain. Since my mind was in freefall, I decided to take a look at the book Jane had given me.

I reached for the paper sack on my nightstand. (more…)

The Moon and Me

Sitting on a razor’s edge, she fills the night sky

With her gentle light, soft rays of moonbeams

Touching my skin, lulling me to slumber.

The sea beneath reflects her image

Rippling light upon waves of salt.

Watching, waiting, she rises high

And peeks into my window,

Her breath an icy kiss on my fevered cheek.

Creative blocks

Sometimes, as a writer, I find myself in a state of flux. One day, the words may flow freely. The next day, I find myself dry as a desert…not one word to put down on paper toward my next two projects.

I feel so stifled on those days. My mind is parched and no amount of wishing can bring the flow I so desperately think I need.

Yes, I did say “think I need.” (more…)

Sleep, dreams…time travel?

Just before bed last night, I posted a piece about getting a good night’s sleep. You can see that post here.

While I did fall asleep easily last night, I found myself caught up in a time-warp dream experience that has left me completely off-kilter this morning.

Have you ever had a dream like that? A dream where it feels like you have dropped into a scene from long ago? A dream that feels so real when you wake up that you are absolutely positive you did some astral time travel?

Well, if so, then you know where I am this morning. Totally out of whack.

I got on YouTube this morning first thing, hoping to find some ambient music or something gentle to listen to while beginning a new work week. In my list of recommended videos sat this piece. As I listened to the beginning bits and watched the gorgeous time lapse images I realized this is just what I needed to get myself together.

Quotes by Alan Watts make this extra perfect.

If you need a Monday morning boost, check out the video. Have a great day. Together, we will get through this!
