Velvet

That Time When a Rock Star Inspired the Creation of a Character

It was one of those moments I will never forget.

Mr. LaVeaux and I were watching Led Zeppelin’s “Celebration Day” for the first time in December of 2012.

Holy crap, this band.

THIS BAND.

I’d grown up listening to this music but I’d never really seen the band perform before…not until we put the “Celebration Day” DVD on to play.

At this point in time, I’d been working on my first novel and needed a love interest for the book’s protagonist.

Cue Jimmy Page.

What better choice than an elegant, older man with style and English swagger to woo my heroine on the haunted, historic streets of Savannah, Georgia?

Thank you, Jimmy Page. You inspired the character Nigel Blackmore in my novel, Velvet, and all these years later I still think you are amazing.

The point of this short post? Never overlook anything in life. Most anything can be an inspiration for you. Whether you are a writer, artist, poet, chef, sculptor, dancer, musician…keep your eyes and ears open.

You just never know.

Hard to Believe it’s Been a Year

Exactly one year ago, I gave Velvet a hug, kissed her on the cheek and sent her out into the universe to be found and embraced by others. That is a bit hard for me to believe. Wow, time does fly fast.

One full year ago, I published my first novel, a project that took three full years to create, write and edit. It is a book of fiction based on my past and a labor of love. My goal in writing is to offer light entertainment for the reader and am grateful for those who choose to read it. I hope that in some way it gives the reader a refreshing break from reality.

Back in April of 2013, I sat on the deck with Mr. LaVeaux and contemplated writing a novel. I asked him what he thought a good setting would be, and immediately he suggested Savannah, Georgia. Of course, I thought. What better place than the city we consider to be our second home.

In Velvet, a lonely divorcee moves from Atlanta to Savannah to start her life anew. She rediscovers old friends, falls into a dark and exciting underground culture, and meets an unlikely mate…all within the historic district of Georgia’s oldest and most haunted city. It is a bit of a love story woven with magical elements, and it is loosely based on my personal life.

The story wrote itself, and over the course of three years it evolved into something that I felt proud to share with the world.

Of course, fiction is just that…fiction…and some people may not enjoy a tale created in the imagination of another. However, for those who do enjoy reading a story, I did my best to create a book worthy of one’s time.

For those who have read Velvet, thank you. For those who haven’t and may be interested, it is free for KindleUnlimited customers at this link here.

If you have written and self-published a novel, please share your link. I would love to see what you have been working on and where your imagination has taken you.

The new book is finished and will soon be published!

Earlier today I completed the second draft of Echo LaVeaux’s Book of the Moon. The book is due a third reread and edit. My hope is that it will be up on Kindle by the end of the week and no later than Halloween day.

The book is slim but filled with poetry, reflections, meditations, and ideas for intention setting during each phase of the Moon. It was created as a way to share my impressions of the Moon during the course of her lifecycle. My hope is that it touches you and inspires you to grow closer to our cosmic sister.

Velvet is still available for FREE on KindleUnlimited. Please grab a copy and – if you have already read the book – please leave your impressions on it by writing a review. If you do, I would be most grateful.

Thank you for supporting me in my writing endeavors.

Peace and all good things from my heart to yours.

Coming soon…

I’m finishing up a little book of reflections, poetry and meditations based on each phase of the moon.

If you read my novel Velvet you will remember that the book is filled with magical scenes, a few of which involve the moon. As a moon watcher, I tend to fill my stories and my artwork with moon images.

It’s an Echo thing, for sure.

I’m truly looking forward to publishing this little book in the very near future. It’ll be a little book with a little price tag.

My wish and hope is that you enjoy reading and using it as much as I enjoyed creating it and putting it all together.

It’s a little gift from my moonlit heart to yours.

Such a good reminder for anyone with the desire to write. Just write.

I can remember 30 some-odd years ago when I realized that I had a gift in the area of writing. Having made straight A’s in English from my earliest school years through college, I discovered a bit later in life that I could use this innate ability to express myself.

More than anything, I wanted to write.

Back during the summer of 1996, while the Summer Olympics were being played out all across the metro Atlanta area, I was taking the MARTA train to and from work. During the Olympics mania, I was writing what would become my first novel idea.

What enthusiasm I brought to the project. Looking back, I can’t help but smile.

I was writing a story based on a real-life experience I’d had involving an 80’s rock star. I worked and worked on that story for nearly ten years but could never finish it. There was no good way to conclude it. And to top it off, our house was burglarized and my computer stolen. (more…)

If Velvet were made into a film…

…this would be the song closing out the final scene and carrying on through the credits. I can’t tell you how many times I listened to this song while writing that last chapter. I cried and cried.

Here is a link to the song: The Air That I Breathe – The Hollies

If you’ve read the book, think back on that last chapter and let me know if you can see where this song fits.
